Pets can grieve profoundly if they lose a beloved companion or friend so it is best to prepare them if you know that they might lose a friend to illness or simply that they are old and coming to the end of their life. Develop new hobbies and types of play for your pet and ensure that they meet other dogs or playmates. Evidence shows that if they have some kind of contact at the very end they are more likely to be accepting of losing a companion. Be prepared for some signs of withdrawal – in some cases pets feel very deeply if they lose a friend so give extra love and cuddles.
